Server Installation
If you have a larger facility that requires multiple clients, you must first install a Velocity Server and then install the Velocity Clients.
Suppose you need to use a separate computer for the Velocity database. In that case, you must first establish a licensed edition of a supported version of SQL Server on that computer and then choose the Data installation option. For details, refer to Data Installation.
To install a Velocity Server, perform the steps in this procedure:
Make sure you are logged onto Windows as an Administrator
Run the Velocity_Installer_3.8.6(build-3.8.6.xxx).exe file:
If you have a Velocity 3.8.6 installation DVD, insert it into your DVD drive, and the auto-start feature should automatically start the Velocity Installer
If you downloaded the files to install Velocity 3.8.6, use Windows Explorer to navigate to the file folder and double-click on Velocity_Installer_3.8.6(build-3.8.6.xxx).exe
After the Velocity Installer’s Welcome (or splash) screen appears, click Next.
On the resulting End-User License Agreement page, select the “I agree to the terms in the License Agreement” option to continue or “I do not accept the License Agreement” to exit the setup. If you want to print the EULA, press the Print button. When finished, click Next
Select Server at the Install Options screen and either accept the currently displayed SQL Server or select a different one, then click Next
Note: If the SQL Server Browser service is not running, a dialog is displayed which enables you to remedy the problem.
At the resulting Web Services Options screen, select whether or not to install the optional Velocity Web Services Client (VWSC), then click Next
Note: Before installing and using the Velocity Web Services Client, you must first install Microsoft’s Internet Information Services (IIS). Refer to Installing Velocity Web Services Client for more information.
At the resulting Application Network and Security screen, the Velocity Installer detects whether this computer is a member of an Active Directory domain or is a local server and selects the correct authentication option:
If the Local machine accounts option is selected, go to Step 8
If the Active Directory option is selected, select the Domain or Organization Unit (OU) whose accounts Velocity can use
You can select the Advanced Authentication option to designate that instead of using Velocity’s default user groups and user names for authentication, you will be using custom ones. (Some government agencies must do this as an additional security measure.) Before selecting this option, read the “Custom Active Directory User & Group Names Setup” section of the Velocity Installation Guide.
Enter a password for the VelocityServices account in the first 'Password' field and confirm it in the first 'Confirm' field
Accept the [Default] password in the second ‘Password’ and ‘Confirm’ fields unless you require a different SQL Server password
If you change this password, all Velocity clients connecting to this server will be prompted for the password to access the Velocity database. The Velocity Installer detects whether this computer has multiple network interface cards:
If there is only one network interface card, go to Step 11
Select the network you will use from the 'Device Network' drop-down list if there are multiple network interface cards
At the resulting System Inspection screen, click Next
At the resulting SQL Server screen, the Velocity Installer detects whether there are any existing instances of SQL Server and displays the available options. Select the SQL Server option you require, then click Next.
Suppose the Velocity Installer detects a licensed edition of a supported version of Microsoft's SQL Server (2017 or later). In that case, you can select the "Create a named instance using the existing SQL server" option.
If you want Velocity to install the free SQL Server 2019 Express edition, confirm the default “Install an Identiv named instance of SQL Express on this computer” option
At the Database Installation screen, specify the location where the Install, Data, Log, and Backups will reside, then click Next
Install: This is the drive, path, and directory name where all SQL Server files will be installed. The default location is displayed. To select a different location, use the Browse button to specify that location.
Data: This is the drive where the Installer automatically configures the SQL data path for the Velocity Database to the default folder. You can click the Browse button to choose a different folder. A *.mdf extension is used for identifying the data file.
Log: This is the drive where the Installer automatically configures the SQL log path for the Velocity Database to the default folder. You can click the Browse button to choose a different folder. A *.ldf extension is used for identifying the log file.
Backup: This is the drive where the Installer automatically configures the SQL backup path for the Velocity Database to the default folder. You can click the Browse button to choose a different folder. A *.bak extension is used for identifying the backup file.At the resulting Application Installation screen, either accept the default location where Velocity will be installed or specify a different location, then click Next
The Prerequisite Gathering screen appears. After a few minutes, the Prerequisite Gathering Complete screen appears.
At the Prerequisite Gathering Complete screen, review the displayed information about the various program components that either will be installed or are already installed, then click Next
The Installing Prerequisites screen appears intermittently throughout the installation process, indicating when another stage of the installation process is complete. Follow the onscreen prompts.
If you chose, at the Web Services Options screen, to install the optional Velocity Web Services Client, it is installed now
On the Velocity Web Services Client Installation screens: ensure all the prerequisites are met and click Next; enter the necessary service account information and port number and click Next
After all the prerequisites are installed, the Application Installation (Progress) screen appears. When the Velocity installation is completed, and the Installation Complete screen appears, select the desired closing options, then click Close
Note: Make sure that the SQL Server Browser Service is Started on the SQL Database Server so that the Velocity Server and Velocity Client installations can locate the database server.
If you encounter problems discovering or connecting to a SQL server during client installation, refer to the Troubleshooting section.
The installation of a Velocity Server is now complete, you can start the Velocity installation again on other computers which will be the Velocity clients. Make sure that you log in to those computers as a Velocity Operator who belongs to the Administrator Role and has Local Administrator privileges.
New Velocity installations come with a 90-day demonstration license. You will have to contact Identiv to:
